The annual cherry blossom festival at Arakurayama Sengen Park in Fujiyoshida, near Mount Fuji, has been cancelled this year. The event, started in 2016, became hugely popular on social media for its stunning views of cherry blossoms with Mount Fuji in the background. However, massive overtourism has made life difficult for locals, with issues like trespassing into private homes, littering, defecating in yards, and severe traffic congestion. Fujiyoshida Mayor Shigeru Horiuchi announced the cancellation, stating: “To protect the dignity and living environment of our citizens, we have decided to bring the curtain down on the 10-year-old festival.” Authorities will now focus on managing ongoing high visitor numbers during the season.
