US Private-Sector Hiring Slumps: Only 22,000 Jobs Added in January, Half of Expectations

US private employers added just 22,000 jobs in January 2026, according to ADP’s National Employment Report—far below economists’ forecast of 45,000 and down from a revised 37,000 in December 2025. The gains were driven entirely by education and health services (+74,000 jobs), amid an aging population boosting healthcare demand. Other sectors declined sharply: professional and business services lost 57,000 (worst since August 2024), manufacturing shed 8,000 (ongoing losses since March 2024). ADP Chief Economist Nela Richardson noted: “We have narrowed the pathway to job creation to one or two sectors,” with overall 2025 private job growth at 398,000 (down from 771,000 in 2024). Wage growth held steady at 4.5% for job-stayers, while job-changers saw 6.4%. Experts warn this concentrated, low-hire/low-fire labor market signals weaker economic growth and fewer opportunities. A government shutdown delayed the official BLS January jobs report to February 11, 2026.
